Jamie EVRARD

These paintings are pictures of bouquets passing through time. Paintings of time passing and of how often things become more and more beautiful for their imperfections, more compelling for their impermanence.

Most Wednesdays I go to the Earthrise Garden Shop were I am lucky enough to be the beneficiary of flowers unsold during the previous week. Or sometimes I pick up the huge bouquets of flowers from Music in the Morning concert series after they have enjoyed a week of concerts. In any case, by the time the bouquets arrive at my studio, they are not new.

Even so, it is usually a week or so before I begin to paint. I don’t know if it is purely out of procrastination or just needing the time to observe and come to know the arrangements, but it seems that by the time I get around to painting them, the flowers are just about to lose their petals, and I feel a great sense of urgency, of having perhaps waited too long.

Something happens then in my studio, usually in the night. After one or two paintings, the bouquets, my possessions, come to possess me. By this time there is very little time left for the flowers, maybe that is part of it, but they seize me, and I’m compelled to capture them, more and more wildly, it seems. I work less and less for the flowers and more and more for the paint.

Then one day they are completely gone, and it is over.

Born: April 25, 1949, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A.

"I received a BA in Art and Anthropology from Brown University and an MA and MFA in studio art with a concentration in printmaking from the University of Iowa. In my last incarnation I became a more painterly type of artist with a strange fascination for gymnastics. I work in monotype, oil paint, and sometimes watercolors, and I'm still trying to do a back handspring all alone. What most intrigues me as subject matter for my paintings are the most ordinary things; still life objects that I see around the house day after day but which resonate for me in their familiarity, and rather unremarkable landscapes in which I can find a particular quiet, understated beauty and mystery. I paint in order to see what it is I am looking at. Making art is a way of taking possession, a way of finding out how things really are, or perhaps of making them as I would like them to be. If a few days go by without my having drawn or painted, I become completely impossible."
