I think of my paintings as coming from a particular language of expression, one which is a response to objects and distinctive forms through which I wish to share aspects of myself in order to bring about a visual resonance. For me, my creative impulse exists as a need to find more of myself than I know exists. I work gesturally, starting with a germ of an idea using colour and form, gradually building the painting with each successive brushstroke. I think of them as being more like structures. I limit description in order to enhance the expressive quality of the work, often culminating in flowers with represent my symbols of universality.

- Jennifer Hornyak

Jennifer Hornyak was born in 1940 in Grimsby, England, where she studied at the Grimsby School of Art (1957-59) before coming to Canada in 1961. Since 1973 when she decided to devote herself entirely to her painting, she has had numerous shows across Canada and the United States. In 1987, Hornyak was the only Canadian invited to participate in the World Exhibition in Paris which featured artists such as Modigliani, Picasso and van Dongen. Her semi-figurative, almost abstract, works which emanate a deep mysticism, are built up through a complex technique of richly coloured glazes creating a remarkable texture.
