Jennifer Hornyak

, RCA

Jennifer Hornyak is known for her vivid and distinctly textured paintings that blur the line between figuration and abstraction. Drawing inspiration from her surroundings, she creates work that is both intimate and universal. Through both color and texture, Hornyak builds a structure for each painting that emanates a still life motif.

“Regardless of my intentions, the final shape of each flowerpot is a direct reflection of my mood. The objects may be the same, but how I paint them entirely depends on how I feel about the world that day. ”

Hornyak uses areas of pale and deep hues to build up a well-integrated negative space that surrounds her freely rendered floral still life subjects. The spontaneous brushwork and undiluted color are reminiscent of the Fauve group of painters of a century ago.

Born in England, she studied at the Grimsby School of Art before coming to Canada. For more than forty years, her work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries across North America and international art fairs. Her paintings are part of numerous private and public collections.

She works and lives in Montreal.

As women in art have been overshadowed by their counter parts for so many years, the intent to highlight and applaud all our women artists from our roster by exhibiting them as a strong united group in one fabulous exhibition. Women of all genera of art will be on display and representing art from across Canada. This exhibition will celebrate the diversity and strength of art done by women in Canada.

Historically women have been overshadowed in the arts by their counter-parts for so many years. It is just until recent years that we see women starting to flourish in the artists. Great artists such as Mary Pratt, Helen Frankenthaler, Georgia O’Keefe, and Emily Carr have paved the way for today’s women in the arts. This show is to exemplify the strong and = innovative art that women artists of today are creating.
